Biography

Anggun Cipta Sasmi (born April 29, 1974, in Jakarta) is a singer/songwriter with French citizenship. Her name means "grace born of a dream" in Bali. Anggun is also the biggest-selling Asian artist outside Asia and made history for being the first Asian artist to break into the international music scene. She is best known in Europe, particularly in France and Italy, and in several parts of Asia.

At a young age, Anggun decided to follow in the footsteps of her father, Darto Singo, and become an entertainer. During her early years, she was influenced by the rock music of native Javanese artists and by the rock & roll icon, Elvis Presley. She was educated in Catholic schools, even though she is a Muslim, because her father wanted Anggun to have a high-quality education. Anggun began performing at age 7 and recorded her first album two years later. By the time Anggun was 17, she was a successful national rock star.

Anggun also performed a duet with Gildas Arzel on the song "C'est le debut", which sounds nearly identical to Donna Lewis's collaboration with Richard Marx in "At the Beginning".

Besides Indonesian, her native language, Anggun is fluent in French and English. She currently splits her time between Montreal and Paris.

Through the years, she has had several hit singles across Europe and Asia. Among her hit songs are "Snow On The Sahara/La Neige Au Sahara", "A Rose In The Wind/La Rose De Vents", "Still Reminds Me/Derriere La Porte", "Chrysalis/Tu Mens", "In Your Mind/Etre Une Femme", "Saviour/Cesse La Pluie", and "I'll Be Alright/Juste Avant Toi".

Anggun is currently anticipating the birth her first child (a daughter) with French actor Cyril Montana. She will be born around November, 2007.

Anggun has been involved with several charities. She has also received several awards, including:
- Awarded with the prestigious distinction of "Chevalier des Arts et Lettres" by the French Cultural Minister for her worldwide achievements and support of the French culture.
- Appointed spokesperson for the United Nations "International Year of Microcredit" to create awareness of and help people in poverty all over the world.
- Appointed as the spokesperson for watchmakers Audemars Piguet.

- CĂ©line Dion covered "Tu Nages" on her French album "1 fille & 4 types".
- Sarah Brightman covered Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" as a bonus track on her album "Live from Las Vegas".
